Fault Current Active Management

Fault Current Active Management (FCAM)

The impact of increased generation on the electricity network will lead to much larger ‘fault currents’ than previously seen (the current that flows under fault conditions). This means we will need to reinforce the network to protect against fault current issues.

This project trialled the innovative use of existing protection assets as an alternative to traditional methods and included an independent risk assessment of the use of existing and new assets for fault current management. Through modelling and measurement we have compiled a picture of how fault currents vary across the network and over time.
