State of the sector

We carry out research into community energy in our area to gain insights into community energy activity, the challenges facing the sector and its future plans.

This research, carried out with Community Energy England, helps us track the progress of the sector in our region and provides an idea of where the North West sits in terms of community energy.

Headlines from the 2021 report:

  • 42 community energy organisations in the North West, with five new groups created
  • Four new full-time equivalent (FTE) roles were created in community energy groups, bringing the total FTE staff to 42 employed in the sector
  • 74 electric vehicle charge points installed
  • Ten community energy organisations reported a total community benefit fund (CBF) value of £566,000 and distributed £367,000 to their communities.
