Request an MPAN Number
What is an MPAN number?

An MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a 13 digit number issued by your Distribution Network Operator (SP Electricity North West). It is unique to your supply and used by energy suppliers to locate your supply information for billing.
MPAN numbers within SP Electricity North West’s network area begin with a 16. If your MPAN does not start with a 16, please click here to find out who your DNO is.
You will find your MPAN on your electricity or dual fuel bill, usually in a box marked 'Supply Number'. It's 21 digits long and begins with 'S'.
If you have applied for a new connection, we can provide the MPAN number for you.
How can I request an MPAN?
If you have applied for a new connection, we will create the MPAN(s) once your project reaches the delivery stage.
To enable us to create the MPAN(s), we will require proof of address. This helps ensure that properties are correctly registered and that location information aligns with Royal Mail records, supporting accurate and consistent data across supplier databases.
SP ENW will accept the following as evidence of proof of address:
Local Authority confirmation of a newly created address, typically issued by the Street Naming and Numbering team (often within the Planning Department). This would apply to new developments, new plots, or changes of use, such as the conversion of a house into flats.
Council Tax bill for an existing residential property. This is particularly relevant if you are requesting a separate supply for part of an existing building. For example, this is commonly used where a flat is located above a commercial premises and separate electricity supplies are required for the residential and commercial areas.
Business Rates bill for an existing commercial property.
Royal Mail Postcode Finder results. If an address can be found within Royal Mail’s postcode database, this provides a reasonable indication that the address has been officially registered.
Providing one of the above documents will help us process your request and create the MPAN(s) as efficiently as possible.
How can I request additional MPAN’s?
In certain circumstances, you may need to apply for additional MPANs at your property.
This is commonly required where a three-phase supply is being separated so that each phase is metered individually, or where a larger supply is being divided to serve multiple units, such as apartments or commercial premises.
If approved, a new MPAN can be created for each separately metered supply.
To request additional MPANs, please complete the appropriate application form:
Domestic properties (up to 60kVA): Please apply engineer will review your application to check whether your existing supply has enough capacity for an additional MPAN. If extra capacity is required, we'll let you know and provide a quotation for any necessary work.
Commercial properties (over 60kVA): Please apply here for an Additional Load application. We'll assess your existing supply and equipment to confirm whether an additional MPAN can be accommodated. If it can, we'll issue a no-cost approval letter for you to sign and return before progressing your request to our MPAN Liaison team. If additional capacity or network work is required, we'll provide a quotation outlining the costs involved.
Please note that each MPAN requires its own electricity meter. Additional MPANs or supplies at the same premises may require a network assessment and approval to ensure the existing infrastructure can safely accommodate them.
How do I arrange a meter?
Your energy supplier will arrange for your electricity meter to be installed. Once your new electricity connection is complete and you've received your 13-digit MPAN number, they will organise for a meter operator to visit and fit the meter. Your supplier will also register your MPAN on their system, ensuring your electricity supply is set up ready for billing. If you have any questions about your meter installation, your chosen supplier will be happy to help.
We recommend getting in touch with your chosen energy supplier before your electricity connection is completed. This will allow them to arrange your meter installation for a date that is on, or close to, the day your new electricity connection is installed, helping to ensure everything is in place as quickly as possible.
