Workshops
More about the workshops
Our workshops support students with key curriculum learnings around electrical circuits while inspiring them to become confident, creative thinkers and problem solvers.
They also carry some important messages around electrical safety.
STEMFirst will come to school and deliver a two-hour session for your pupils (up to 40 pupils).
We will cover the statutory KS2 requirements of electricity and pupils will be taught to:
• associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit
• compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches
• use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.
Pupils will also:
• construct simple, series and parallel circuits
• experiment and test different circuits so they can answer questions about what happens when they try different components, for example, switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors, insulators and conductors.
• learn how to represent a simple circuit in a diagram using recognised symbols in both SERIES and PARALLEL circuits
• be taught to take the necessary precautions for working safely with electricity
• will be given a challenge to build a circuit to solve a real-life problem.
Learning Outcomes
• Exploring Electricity – know about the key vocabulary – from ‘current’ to ‘resistance’
• Make predictions, testing, observation, recording information and reporting conclusions on how electrical circuits work
• Use scientific diagrams and labels around electricity – converting pictorial / real life circuits into accurate circuit diagrams
• Understand how to keep safe around electricity
• Understand the difference between insulators and conductors
Skills
• Develop Understanding of Scientific ideas around electricity
• Develop Working and Thinking Scientifically - using electrical scientific knowledge to solve problems
• Exploring ideas and Observation
• Careers awareness of different roles in the electricity / energy generation sector
