This is a major £10 million infrastructure investment to to replace a 2.4 kilometre section of 132,000-volt and 33,000-volt oil filled cable circuits following damage caused by flooding in new year 2025. The cables will be replaced with modern, environmentally friendly aluminium cables, increasing resilience and reliability.
On New Year’s Day 2025 the electricity network was hit by heavy rain that caused flooding of the River Tame in Stockport. The flooding was extensive and the council-owned bridge which was being used to support power cables was destroyed by the impact. The cables were taken out of service for safety reasons therefore relying on back feeds from other supplies temporarily. This will provide a permanent solution.
The project is being delivered by SP Electricity North West, with our trusted partners, JSM managing the work.
Work began in September 2025 and is expected to be completed by February 2026.
This section of the project is taking place within Reddish Vale Country Park , including drilling underneath the River Tame.
Work began in August 2025 and is expected to be completed by February 2027.
