Salford investment
We're delivering the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £1bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £32m programme of key projects across Greater Manchester.
We're committed to maintaining and improving the network through our capital investment programme
These capital projects invest £24m in Salford's power network and involve the replacement and upgrade of three large Grid transformers at our Frederick Road depot, upgrade of the 132,000-volt overhead lines at Agecroft and the replacement of the 132,000-volt underground cables across the areas of Agecroft and Duchy Road which will see older, oil filled cables replaced with more modern cables and eliminate oil leakage risks.. The work will significantly enhance the reliability and environmental infrastructure throughout Salford and Greater Manchester.
More than 146,000 homes and businesses will benefit as the upgraded assets will cater for Greater Manchester’s future needs for electricity, which underpins the region’s continued exceptional growth.
Once complete, local homes and businesses will benefit from the new and improved infrastructure along with supporting the regeneration of the area and the increased demand required to connect to low carbon technologies.
- This £24m investment will future-proof Salford, and Greater Manchester's electricity infrastructure and provide a safe and reliable network, significantly increasing capacity on the network.
- We are working closely with Salford Council, Salford University, Network Rail, and the Salford Rise project to coordinate works and minimise disruption.
- We are installing ducts for Salford University as part of our works on University Road, demonstrating partnership and efficiency.
- We are committed to keeping residents, businesses, and commuters informed every step of the way.
All work has been agreed with Salford Council and while work takes place, road closures and temporary traffic lights are used so teams can work safely. Underground work is expected to be complete by November 2026 while the substation upgrades, which take place on our own private land, will finish in December 2027.
🔔 Phase two underground cable replacement update January 2026
Phase one of the work to excavate and install ducting (what the cable sits in) is now complete. Phase two of the project sees teams return to begin the process of pulling the underground 132,000-volt electricity cable through the ducting. This involves excavating 'bays' at specific points along the route to 'joint' the cables together, before filling the bays back in and reinstating the road to its original condition.
