We're investing £1.1m to replace 3.6km of ageing oil-filled electricity cables between our Gale and Healey Substations with modern, solid aluminium cables. This upgrade will improve the reliability of your electricity supply and reduce the risk of faults whilst also meeting demand for increased loads on the network from the likes of electric vehicles and heat pumps.
The existing infrastructure has been identified as having a poor fault history. By doing the work we will improve the reliability of the power network in this area.
The project supports Lancashire’s net zero ambitions. It will enable electric vehicle connectivity surrounding communities, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and future-proof the electricity network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and tourists.
The project is being delivered by SP Electricity North West, with our trusted partners, Network Plus contracted to oversee the work.
Work will begin in February 2026 and is expected to be completed by late 2026.
Engineers will start work at our Hall Street through to Healey. Work will then progress to our Gale substation.
We aim to minimise any disruption. If a planned outage is required, we’ll notify you at least 48 hours in advance and provide support, including extra support for customers who require extra care.
No road closures are planned however some lane closures will be necessary with traffic management in place to keep our engineers safe. We’re working closely with Lancashire County Council to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving.
This project will be utilising SRL's REMOS (Remotely Operated Mobile Signals). The system uses portable traffic signals equipped with built‑in radar sensors and CCTV cameras to monitor vehicle movements and stream live footage from site. This data is transmitted in real time to SRL’s Control Centre, where trained operators remotely manage signal timings and interventions to keep traffic moving smoothly.
We’re coordinating with local businesses and communities to maintain access and minimise disruption. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted where needed.
