This is a major £56 million infrastructure investment to refurbish and reconductor 132,000-volt overhead line towers between Roosecote and Sellafield substations. It forms part of the wider Cumbria Ring reinforcement and will improve the reliability and resilience of the electricity network across all of Cumbria. 152 towers (pylons) covering a distance of 47km the West Coast of Cumbria.
The project supports Cumbria’s ambition to become a net zero carbon county by 2037. It will enable electric vehicle connectivity surrounding communities, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and future-proof the electricity network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and tourists.
The towers were originally built in 1955, with partial refurbishment in the mid-1990s. The upgrade is essential to support increased electricity demand and enable future renewable energy connections.
The project is being delivered by SP Electricity North West, with our trusted partners, Aureous managing tower refurbishment, rebuild and overheald line reconductering.
Work began in July 2025 and is expected to be completed by February 2027.
The project spans a 47km route from Roosecote substation (Tower AF001) to Sellafield substation (Tower AF152), crossing both Westmorland & Furness Council and Cumberland Council areas.
Work began in August 2025 and is expected to be completed by February 2027.
