We're investing £5m including the construction of a new primary substation built on Blackpool Airport as part of the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.
Phase one of the work requires underground cable ducting (what the cable sits in) to be installed in the surrounding Squires Gate area, including the use of a directional drill to protect the integrity of Blackpool's heritage tram lines. We’ve proactivley reflected this in our plans to preserve the heritage lines, showcasing our care and expertise, using specialist equipment to do this.
Phase two will see the construction of the substation on the grounds of Blackpool Airport.
Lancashire County Council have identified the area located around Blackpool Airport as an Enterprise Zone, requiring an increased demand of 30MVA (MegaVolt-Amperes) to facilitate this strategic vision.
The project is being delivered by SP Electricity North West, with our trusted partners, Network Plus contracted to oversee the excavation and duct installation.
Work began in January 2025 and is expected to be completed by late 2026.
Engineers are working in and around Squires Gate. Work will then progress onto the grounds of Blackpool Airport.

No road closures are planned however some lane closures will be necessary with traffic management in place to keep our engineers safe. We’re working closely with Lancashire County Council to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving.
We’re coordinating with local businesses and communities to maintain access and minimise disruption. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted where needed.
