Blackpool Enterprise Zone
We're delivering the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £1bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £33m programme of key projects across Lancashire.
We're committed to maintaining and improving the network through our capital investment programme
Engineers have commenced work on a project which will see some £7.5m worth of upgrades carried out including 5.6km of new 33,000-volt underground cable and a new primary substation built on Blackpool Airport.
Lancashire County Council have identified the area located around Blackpool Airport as an Enterprise Zone, requiring an increased demand of 30MVA (MegaVolt-Amperes) to facilitate this strategic vision.
The current infrastructure out of our Squires Gate primary substation, does not have the required capacity and so we must reinforce the network to support this development.
Completion of this project will safeguard the future needs of the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone and the significant economic growth it brings to the area.
Phase one of the work commenced in 2024 and requires underground cable ducting (what the cable sits in) to be installed in the surrounding Squires Gate area, including the use of a directional drill to protect the integrity of Blackpool's heritage tram lines. We’ve proactively reflected this in our plans to preserve the heritage lines, showcasing our care and expertise, using specialist equipment to do this whilst also keeping the traffic moving.
Phase two will see the construction of a new primary substation on Blackpool Airport and will commence in spring 2026.
This project supports the economic growth of the Blackpool region.
- The project supports our commitment to reinforcing the network and futureproofing for increased demand from low carbon technologies and data centres
- We are working closely with Blackpool & Fylde Council to coordinate work and minimise disruption
- Traffic Management will be necessary but will be carefully planned and communicated in advance in collaboration with Blackpool & Fylde Council
- We are committed to keeping residents, businesses, and commuters informed every step of the way.
Work is expected to be completed early 2027.
Installing underground electricity cables with a directional drill
Pilot bore
A pilot hole is drilled, creating the initial route of the intended cable lay.
Steering around obstacles
The drill steers around obstacles to protect everything from trees and rivers to tram and railway lines.
Fluid circulation
A closed-loop system pumps specialised "mud" down the drill to lubricate the path.
Bore enlargement
Widening the bore tunnel to the required diameter to fit the ducting.
Duct installation
Ducts are pulled through the bore and installed (what the power cable sits in).
Cable installation
The power cable is pulled through the ducting and the surface reinstated to its original condition.
