We’re installing a new 33,000-volt electricity cable between Longsight Substation and a new primary substation in Hulme. This work supports the regeneration of Manchester’s Southern Gateway area, enabling future residential, commercial, and leisure developments.
Manchester City Council has identified Southern Gateway as a strategic development zone. This project will provide the electrical infrastructure needed to support up to 25MVA (Mega Volt-Amperes) of new demand in the area, helping power new homes, businesses, and public spaces.
The project is being delivered by Electricity North West, with our trusted partners:
Network Plus handling cable installation
DH Welton managing civil works for the new substation
EI&T contractors installing electrical equipment
We aim to minimise any disruption. If a planned outage is required, we’ll notify you at least 48 hours in advance and provide support, including extra support for customers who require extra care.
Yes. Some disruption is expected as we work through Manchester city centre. We’re working closely with Manchester City Council to minimise traffic impacts and keep roads open wherever possible.
We’re coordinating with local businesses, schools, and services to maintain access and minimise disruption. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted where needed.
We’re here to help. If you or someone you know needs extra support during the works, please contact us so we can provide tailored assistance. You can visit our Extra Care web pages for lots of help and information, and sign up to our Extra Care Register.
The project runs from February 2025 to approximately November 2026. Duct installation has nearly been completed, and civil works for the new substation started in April 2025.
