Southern Gateway investment

£6.5m Southern Gateway investment

Electricity North West is embarking on the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £2bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £32m programme of key projects across Greater Manchester.

We're committed to maintaining and improving the network through our capital investment programme

Manchester City Council have identified the Southern Gateway area of Manchester as a strategic development site to populate the area with mixed leisure, commercial, retail and residential development. The demand at Mayfield forms part of significant development over the past 10 years. The level of demand and the need for capacity requires an area for a new primary substation.

Engineers have commenced th work work which will see £6.5m worth of upgrades carried out on the power network in the Southern Gateway area of Manchester.

As part of our capital investment programme, these works will establish a 33,000kW underground cable circuit between Longsight and a and the delivery of a new primary substation at Hulme as well as an extended switchboard at Longsight primary substation to reinforce and future-proof the network.

Once complete, local homes and businesses are expected to benefit from the new and improved infrastructure along with supporting the regeneration of the area.

  • This £6.5m investment will enable mixed leisure, commercial, retail and residential development in the area.
  • The project supports ENWL’s commitment to reinforcing the network and futureproofing for increased demand from low carbon technologies
  • We are working closely with Manchester City Council to coordinate works and minimise disruption
  • Road closures and diversions may be necessary but will be carefully planned and communicated in advance in collaboration with local authorities.
  • We are committed to keeping residents, businesses, and commuters informed every step of the way.

Work is expected to be completed by November 2026, all work has been agreed with the local authorities and Electricity North West has hand delivered letters to customers with details of any traffic management.
