We’re building a new primary substation and installing a new 33,000-volt electricity cable between Stuart Street Substation and the new primary substation in the Mayfield area of Manchester. This infrastructure will support the regeneration of Mayfield, enabling future residential, commercial, leisure, and retail developments.
Manchester City Council and the Mayfield Development partnership have identified the area as a strategic growth zone. The anticipated demand requires a new substation to transfer the load from adjacent primaries and support future energy needs.
The project is being delivered by SP Electricity North West, with our trusted partners:
Network Plus handling cable installation
SP Electricity North West civil contractors managing substation construction
EI&T contractors installing electrical equipment

Yes. Some disruption is expected as we work through Manchester city centre. We’re working closely with Manchester City Council to minimise traffic impacts and keep roads open wherever possible.
We’re coordinating with local businesses, schools, and services to maintain access and minimise disruption. Alternative routes will be clearly signposted where needed.
We’re here to help. If you or someone you know needs extra support during the works, please contact us so we can provide tailored assistance. You can visit our Extra Care web pages for lots of help and information, and sign up to our Extra Care Register.
