£4.5m Barrow investment

Electricity North West is embarking on the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £2bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £40m programme in Cumbria.

A major £4.5m project in Barrow to replace five aging high voltage cable circuits to ensure long-term resilience and improve customer experience, upgrading the power network from Barrow to Dalton over a distance of 5km, with 4,820 customers fed from the circuits. The project begian in March 2025 and has an estimated completion date of November 2026. The cable route is along Abbey Road, this is one of the arterial routes into Barrow, and Market Street, Dalton, which is the main road through the town. As such there will be an impact to the local community.

Engineers started work in March 2025, on Abbey Road.

The following roads will be affected ove rthe course of the project:

Cotswold Crescent | Ainslie Street | Warwick Street | Victoria Rd | Fairfield Lane | Abbey Road (Barrow) | Valley Drive | Leith Flat Brow | Abbey Road (Dalton) | Market Street.

We will initially lay underground ducts to house the cables before returning later in the year to pull the cable into place and connect them to the network.

Work is expected to last 18 months, all work has been agreed with the local authorities and Electricity North West has hand delivered letters to customers with details of any traffic management.

Multimillion-pound investment underway in Barrow

A multimillion-pound investment project to enhance and improve reliability on Barrow’s power network is now underway. Electricity North West started work in the town this week with the £4m project benefiting more than 4,800 homes and businesses.
