Standards of performance
We are one of the electricity distribution network operators (DNOs), along with independent distribution network operators (IDNOs) that are regulated and licensed by Ofgem.
In Great Britain, there are:
- 14 DNO licences operated by 6 companies.
- 6 IDNO licences.
Distribution network operators
DNOs hold regional licences for the provision of electricity distribution services. We are licensed to operate in the North West of England.
As a DNO, we are under certain statutory duties and are regulated through price controls aiming to provide incentives to minimise operating, capital and financing costs.
Independent distribution network operators
IDNOs do not have distribution areas but tend to own and operate network extensions, connected to the existing distribution network.
IDNOs are obliged to meet guaranteed standards of performance with service backed by a guarantee and established by:
- Electricity (Standards of Performance) Regulations 2010;
- Electricity (Connection Standards of Performance) Regulations 2010.
