Agecroft - Frederick Road investment

£11.6m Agecroft - Frederick Road investment

We're delivering the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £1bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £32m programme of key projects across Greater Manchester.

We're committed to maintaining and improving the network through our capital investment programme

This £11.6m capital project investment will significantly enhance the reliability and environmental infrastructure throughout Salford and the surrounding areas. More than 24,000 homes and businesses will benefit from the new electricity supply which will see older, oil filled cables replaced with more modern cables and eliminate oil leakage risks.

This project is split out into smaller sub-projects.

🔔 Phase two update January 2026

As phase one of the work to excavate and install ducting (what the cable sits in) heads towards completion, phase two of the project sees teams return to begin the process of pulling the underground 132,000-volt electricity cable through the ducting. This involves excavating 'bays' at specific points along the route to 'joint' the cables together, before filling the bays back in and reinstating the road to its original condition.

Project overview

The work runs from June 2025 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2026.

The project supports our commitment to removing oil-filled cables from the network by 2040, supporting clean growth and net zero targets.

We are working closely with Salford Council to coordinate works and minimise disruption.

Road closures and diversions are necessary but will be carefully planned and communicated in advance in collaboration with local authorities.

We are committed to keeping residents, businesses, and commuters informed every step of the way.

for the replacement and upgrade of 6.2km twin circuit oil filled 132,000-volt underground cables between our Frederick Road depot and Agecroft to allow increased reliability and capacity.

Once complete, local homes and businesses will benefit from the new and improved infrastructure along with supporting the regeneration of the area and the increased demand required to connect to low carbon technologies.

  • This £11.6m investment will future-proof Salford’s electricity infrastructure and provide a safe and reliable network
