Funding 2019

Empowering our Communities

Making changes to empower our communities, we're now combining our welfare and community energy funding to support more communities in our region.

Following the success of our ‘Powering our Communities Fund' and ‘Vulnerable customer grants’, we have now combined the two to enable us to have a bigger pot and help to empower even more communities. We now have a total of £250,000 available to winning applications.

We aim to keep the criteria broad, as we know that communities have their own innovative ideas on how they can increase their resilience and bring community-wide benefit; however, applications should be linked to one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Investigating or delivering new ways of working, fit for a smart, flexible low carbon grid;
  2. Engaging customers and communities in energy issues, particularly energy efficiency;
  3. Engaging communities to ensure 'no-one gets left behind' in the energy system transition;
  4. Supporting vulnerable customers and/or reducing fuel poverty in our communities;
  5. Providing 'access to' or a 'voice for' seldom heard groups of our region to help us get to know all our customers;
  6. Increasing the take up of the Electricity North West priority services register.

Applications will be accepted from any type of organisation including community benefit societies, industrial provident societies, charities, schools or local authorities as long as they can demonstrate the community involvement or local benefit of their project.

The funding can be used to support a wide range of activities including producing materials to promote initiatives, supporting staff time or technical expertise, buying equipment or researching a new approach/business model.

For projects that meet criteria 1-3 we will award successful projects with between £1,000 and £15,000. There is up to £75,000 available. Successful projects that meet these criteria will be made aware of the outcome in January 2020 to start from February 2020.

For projects that meet criteria 4-6 there are awards available between £1,000 and £50,000 with a total fund of £175,000 available. Successful applicants will be informed by February 2020 for projects to start in April 2020.

For further details about the fund criteria and application process please read our fund criteria document.

The majority of the project activity needs to be located in the Electricity North West licence area; details of local authority areas that this includes are in the call criteria document.
