Powering our Communities Fund

Powering our Communities is an annual fund which provides seed funding to support the development of community and local energy in our region.

We are pleased to launch the Powering our Communities Fund 2020-2021.

Applications are invited for projects that support the aim of putting community and local energy at the heart of our communities and, in particular, can demonstrate how they can contribute to the delivery of one or more of the following priorities:

  1. Investigating or piloting new business models or new ways of working
  2. Scaling up delivery of a community or local energy project or group
  3. Engaging communities to ensure “no-one gets left behind” in the energy system transition.

This year we are particularly looking for projects that bring something new to the sector or our region. It could be an idea that has been developed outside of our region, or one that hasn’t been tried anywhere before, or a project being established in an area new to community and local energy. 

The majority of the project activity needs to be located in Electricity North West’s licence area. The breakdown of the licence area can be found in the call criteria document.

Who can apply?

Applications will be accepted from any type of organisation including community benefit societies, industrial provident societies, charities, schools or local authorities as long as they can demonstrate the community involvement or local benefit of their project.

We also welcome projects in partnership with organisations such as local authorities and businesses as long as it is clear what control and benefit the local community will have as a result of the project. 

Our fund is open to all parts of our community and we particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian or other ethnic minority groups.

What can be funded?

The funding can be used to support a wide range of activities including producing materials to promote initiatives, supporting staff time or technical expertise, buying equipment or researching a new approach / business model.

How much funding is available?

We will award successful projects between £1,000 and £20,000 from the maximum available fund of £75,000. The project will need a bank account to accept the funding.

Successful projects will be made aware of the outcome in early 2021 when grants will be confirmed. It is expected projects will start soon after the grant is awarded and last for no more than about a year from the start date.
