11/08/15: £2m investment will boost electricity in Wigan

More than 5,000 homes and businesses will benefit from a £2.4million major project to upgrade the local electricity network in Atherton, Wigan. £2m investment will boost electricity in Wigan

Last week the region’s power network operator, Electricity North West, started to install seven kilometres of new improved underground cable between Salford Road in Over Hulton and Johnson Street in Atherton.

The scheme, which is due to be completed in November, will replace cables which have been in place for more than 50 years to create more capacity. This means that power supplies will remain reliable now and into the future even if demand increases with newly built homes and businesses in the area.

Tim Groom, head of major projects for Electricity North West, said: “This vital work highlights our commitment in ensuring we keep the lights on for our customers.

“It is essential that we replace and upgrade these cables, which have been providing electricity to local customers since the 1960s, to ensure customers receive the power they need.

“We will continue to invest in the power network across the North West to ensure we provide the best service to our customers.”

Councillor David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “I’m delighted that Electricity North West are investing in the local electricity network and upgrading power cables which have been keeping the lights on in the area for decades. This project will benefit the local community now and for years to come.”

If customers have any queries about the project, they can call Electricity North West on 0800 195 4141 or follow @ElectricityNW.
