Independent connection providers

Woman on phone

We offer guidance if you are seeking information regarding Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), or you are applying for Points of Connections, in the North West region.

Contestable and non-contestable work

Connections carried out within the North West have two elements of contestable and non-contestable work, please see our Common Charging Methodology for more information.

  • Non-contestable works can only be carried out by Electricity North West as the Distribution Network Owner (DNO).
  • Contestable work can be carried out by any ICP.

For more information on all approved ICPs, please see lloydsregister.co.uk.

Standards of service

We must comply with a set of standards associated to non-contestable work that are covered by our licence (specifically Licence Condition 15).

We apply voluntary payments in line with the Guaranteed Standards of Performance (GSoP) introduced by Ofgem in October 2011 for formal quotations. In the same way, ICPs must comply with standards of service.

For more information, please see standards of service relating to all ICPs.

Contestable applications

If you would like to apply for a formal quotation for the contestable element of work, please complete the application form below.

  • Quote and acceptance

Your quote will be for the non-contestable elements of the work unless otherwise stated through the application process.

Within your quote it is important that you read the project specification as this will outline any assumptions that we make.

Your acceptance must be accompanied with:

    • details of your electricity provider; and
    • a Letter of Authority if the cheque being paid is not the name of original applicant.

An incomplete acceptance will mean that your cheque is not processed and we will contact you regarding the missing information and this will cause a delay to your connection

If you have any queries at this stage please contact us on 0800 048 1820, and select option 3.

  • Planning and dates

Once your acceptance has been processed, we will issue you with a Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) which you will need to provide to your supplier to arrange your meter installation. We will also contact you once payment has been made to confirm that your site is ready for the connection.

For low voltage connections we must partialy energise your supply within five days, and fully energise it within 10 days. For high voltage connections this is increased to 10 days and 20 days.

If you're not the person dealing with the site installation, then at this point it's important that you give us the details of the site contact to prevent any delays.

We will provide you with a planned date for the energisation to take place when we've confirmed that the site is ready.

If we attend site and the work cannot be carried out, there may be additional costs incurred.

  • Site works

The delivery team who arrive on site to carry out your connection will carry out all works in accordance with our health and safety policies. They will not carry out the work if they find:

    • black ducting installed
    • the ducting at the incorrect depth
    • an incomplete installation
    • scaffolding of other obstructions in the way.

If you have any queries at this stage please contact us on 0800 048 1820, and select option 3.

  • Metering

Electricity North West does not sell you electricity and therefore we do not install meters. You will need to arrange for your supplier to install a meter following the connection.

Your appointed supplier will require your MPAN number which we will provide following acceptance of your quotation.

For metering enquiries please contact your supplier.

  • Guaranteed Standards of Performance

Ofgem implemented Guaranteed Standards of Performance (GSoP) in 2010 for all electricity netowrk operators. Electricity North West offers voluntary payments based on these standards.
