Small scale generation

If you are planning to connect new generators to our network, you need to inform us or make an application, so that we can continue to manage and maintain our local electricity network.

Where your small scale generation installation includes an inverter, the rating of the installation is deemed to be the inverters continuous steady state rating. Small scale generation covers installations up to a maximum 16 amps per phase. For example 4kW of PV modules installed on a roof via a 16 Amp inverter is classified as small scale generation (i.e. not exceeding 16 Amps).

For guidance on what to do when connecting small scale generation, see below:

Connection type

 What to do

Small scale embedded
generator at a single premise (rated no greater than 16 amps/phase)

Photovoltaic, domestic combined heat and power (CHP), micro hydro power & fuel cells

You simply need to notify us about this type of generation within 28 days of commissioning. You can do this by filling in a SSEG commissioning installation form and email it or post it to us.

Small scale embedded
generator at multiple premises (rated no greater than 16 amps/phase)

You will need to apply for this type of connection (we may be required to carry out additional work on the network). You can do this by filling in an application form and email it or post it to us.
