Generation installation

If you need help to understand the process to connect Distributed generation, factors affecting the connection costs and background industry information then please read our DG Connection Guide.

If you wish to install a small scale embedded generation unit the installation is to be rated no greater than 16 Amps per phase, if your generator complies to this then all you need to do is complete the G83/1 stage 1 to notify us. Electricity North West advises customers to contact their supplier regarding metering arrangements.

We appreciate your support in this area as this information allows us to manage and maintain the network that supports your local supply. If you are connecting multiple generators at separate locations please complete the G83 stage 2.

In the majority of cases the installation of a single Small Scale Embedded Generator (SSEG) unit connected in parallel with Electricity North West Network will be acceptable with no further arrangements necessary.

However, the installer of the apparatus must advise Electricity North West of the installation within 28 days of commissioning and complete the criteria as contained within the form.

  • A Manufacture’s type verification test report
  • A copy of the circuit diagram
  • Schedule of protections settings, possibly a computer print out

The main types of generation that are covered by a G83/1.1 include:

  • Photovoltaic
  • Domestic Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
  • Micro Hydro power
  • Fuel Cells

Note: If intend to install a wind turbine you are required to complete a G59 application

IMPORTANT: Statement on connection terms for low voltage connected premises

Customers with Low Voltage installations should be aware that their present terms for use of their connection to Electricity North West Distribution System may require the customer to seek and be granted prior consent from Electricity North West before any source of electricity generation is connected.

Electricity North West hereby affirm that where the Customer's present terms for use of their connection to Electricity North West Distribution System require prior consent from Electricity North West for the connection of generating equipment to the Customer's premises, Electricity North West waives that obligation in the circumstance where the intended sources of electricity generation are to be connected in parallel with Electricity North West's Low Voltage Distribution System and will have a aggregate rating of up to and including 16 ampere per phase inclusive of all existing sources of electricity generation connected within the premises, subject to the Customer ensuring that the installer (or the Customer by default) shall notify Electricity North West before or on the same day as the relevant sources of generation are connected.

For the avoidance of doubt a person installing sources of electricity generation, for which prior consent is not required from the distributor, remains statutorily obliged to notify Electricity North West in accordance with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 irrespective of the Customer's terms for use of their connection to the Electricity North West Distribution System.
