Distributed generation

If you are looking for advice on generation that can be connected to our network, we are always available to give advice and support.

Industry terminology

When considering generation connection, please be aware of industry-specific terminologies.

For example, 16 Amp per phase connections is also known as:

  • 3-phase generation with a rating of <11 kW;
  • single-phase generation with a rating <3.66 kW.

Generation connection examples

  • PV System - less than 30m2, <15 large panels or <20 small to medium PV panels.
  • CHP-A micro-CHP plant rated 6kW (3-phase) (the size of a big dishwasher 0.8x1x1m) could have up to a thermal output of 18 kW.

Small scale wind

If you are planning on installing wind generation, you will need to refer to the G59/2 connection process.

Following discussion, you will then be advised to proceed to the G83/1-1 process or the G83/1-1 guides.

Decision tree for the Generation Connection Guide

The decision tree below will guide you to the most relevant Connection Guide for Distributed Generation or application for a Generator Connection.

Is your generating unit one of the following technologies?

  • Domestic Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
  • Photo-Volatic (PV)
  • Fuel Cells
  • Hydro power plant

Less than 16 Amps per phase?

Is your generation plant:

  • Connected at 230 V for a single phase system
  • Connected at 400 V for a three phase system

How many generators are you planning to install?

Additional information

Below we have provided some additional supporting information that will assist our customers when looking to connect large generation projects to our network:  Please be aware that a customer will only pay reinforcement charges to the network if the works is solely to support their requirements.

  • If you are connecting at 33kv please review our heat maps for guidance on locations the aim is to keep your costs down by avoiding any reinforcement charges to the network
  • Use our Long Term Development Statement to further assist in areas where reinforcement may not be required
  • Complete our ready reckoner that will be able to provide you with some indicative costs and times for work to be completed

Once you have confirmed the location and likely size of the generator we can provide a budget quotation to provide some further indication on costs this will take between 10 and 20 days dependent on size of connection.

When we provide a full quotation for the works you wish to undertake the quotation will be valid for a 3 month period.  The time frames for producing a full quotation that is specific to your requirements are:

  • 45 working days for a low voltage connection
  • 65 working days for a high voltage or extra high voltage connection

Are you a priority customer?

We appreciate that some customers have additional requirements and may have circumstances where a priority service is needed for a variety of reasons.
