21/04/15: Power Saver Challenge shortlisted for prestigious national award

Electricity North West’s pioneering Power Saver Challenge has been shortlisted for a national award for Engaging Customers on Sustainability as part of Business in the Community’s Responsible Business Awards. Power network operator Electricity North West launched the Power Saver Challenge in November to help eliminate the need to build a costly new substation to cope with growing demand.

The Power Saver Challenge, the first of its kind in the country, encouraged residents in the Heaton Moor and Heaton Norris areas of Stockport to become more energy efficient. Within just three months the majority of residents had already reduced their energy usage by 10 percent, which equates to £59 on the average annual electricity bill.

The Responsible Business Awards is the most prestigious and respected awards championing responsible business in the UK and abroad. It celebrates inspirational companies that are taking action to address social and environmental issues and transform their communities.

Paul Bircham, network strategy and technical services director for Electricity North West, said: “It is fantastic that our Power Saver Challenge has been shortlisted for this prestigious award. The exciting new initiative not only helped residents reduce their energy usage, and therefore lower their electricity bills, but the trial really brought the community together. “We fully recognise the impact our operations have on people and the environment and we work hard to engage with the communities in which we serve. We believe this is vital to ensure we get closer to our customers and we will endeavour to further develop our community engagement.”

Stephen Howard, chief executive, for Business in the Community, said “The Responsible Business Awards celebrate the very best of business, so it is fitting to be announcing the shortlist today as part of Responsible Business Week, which raises awareness of business as a powerful force for good.

“We congratulate Electricity North West for playing its part in creating a fairer society and more sustainable future. The shortlisted businesses publically demonstrate that business has a greater purpose then simply generating profit and are a great example to others.”

The announcement of the 2015 Responsible Business Awards shortlist coincides with Responsible Business Week (20-26 April 2015) an annual initiative to increase awareness of the positive contribution of business in society.

Winners will be announced at Business in the Community’s Annual Responsible Business Gala Dinner on 7 July 2015.
