22/10/14: Thousands set to enjoy a day of electrifying exploration at Manchester Science Festival

Thousands of budding engineers from across Greater Manchester will discover the wonders of electricity through a day of electric exploration as part of the annual Manchester Science Festival next week. Manchester Science Festival 2014

Youngsters will be able to make or break a circuit, build a pylon and generate their own power at a special event organised by the region’s power network operator, Electricity North West.

More than 30 volunteers from Electricity North West will be on hand at the free event to showcase how power gets from power stations to homes.

Jonathan Collins, corporate social responsibility manager for Electricity North West, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Manchester Science Festival again this year and we’re looking forward to spending the day teaching children and families all about the wonders of electricity.

“It is vital that we inspire the engineers of the future and this event creates a great opportunity to highlight not only the importance of electricity, but also how exciting it can be.”

Electric dreams, will take place on Thursday 30th October from 10am-4pm at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Marieke Navin, director of the Manchester Science Festival, said: “Science busking with our sponsors is such an important part of our festival. It really gives visitors of all ages a fantastic insight into their work to inspire a future generation of engineers of both genders.

“We are thrilled that our sponsors Electricity North West are joining us for the festival on the 30th October to bring their work to life and show the workings and the magic behind something that we use and take for granted every day.”

This year children will also be able to trial a new board game which Electricity North West has designed to help explain to secondary school pupils how power is delivered to homes and the obstacles that are overcome.

The annual Manchester Science Festival, which is taking place between 23rd October and 2nd November, aims to inspire people with science in the most creative ways possible.
