21/08/14: Powerful £1.6m investment set for thousands of Manchester residents and businesses

The region’s power network operator, Electricity North West, is installing new electricity cables in Manchester as part of a £1.6million investment. Powerful £1.6m investment set for thousands of Manchester residents and businesses

The company will be installing 5km of new improved underground cables between Bloom Street in Manchester city centre and Stuart Street in Clayton, east Manchester as part of the project which started last week.

The project, which will be completed by the end of December, will help improve the quality of supply to around 80,000 customers as the new cables are more reliable and the project will reduce any potential impact on customer power supplies.

Tim Groom, head of major projects for Electricity North West, said: “This project shows our commitment to ensuring our customers in Manchester continue to enjoy a reliable and efficient power supply to their homes and businesses for many more years to come.

“As Manchester continues to grow it’s important that we plan ahead and invest in the local power network to meet the increasing demand and keep the lights on for our customers.

“Unfortunately there is no way to install these underground cables without some disruption, but I hope drivers and residents in the area understand the need for this essential project and we promise to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

Work has been planned to keep any disruption to a minimum and electricity supplies will not be affected by the scheme although roadworks will be needed and advance warning signs will be used to keep motorists informed.

Working closely with Manchester City Council there will be lane closures and five road closures during the project:

• Travis Street - Wyre Street - 8th - 18th September - road closure
• Fairfield Street - London Road - 22nd September - 1st October - lane closure
• Granby Row - 2nd - 10th October - road closure
• Cobourg Street - 13th - 15th October - road closure
• Fairfield Street to Chorlton Street - 16th - 23rd October - temporary traffic signals
• Chorlton Street - 24th October - 5th November - lane closures
• Richmond Street - Bloom Street – 24th October – 5th November – road closure
• Bloom Street – 6th - 25th November - road closure

If anyone living in the area has any queries about the project, they are advised to call Electricity North West on 0800 195 4141 or follow us @ElectricityNW.
