06/03/14: Severe weather review welcomed

Electricity North West has welcomed a government review into severe weather responses following the Christmas storm recognised as one of the worst storms to hit the UK in years.

In the North West, winds of more than 100mph caused severe and widespread damage to the overhead line network causing hundreds of separate faults resulting in power cuts for around 45,000 properties. Engineers restored power to 98% of properties within 24 hours.

Electricity North West Chief Executive, Steve Johnson, said: “I’m proud of the way our people responded to restore power quickly in horrendous conditions. We have contributed heavily to this review and I welcome its recommendations in sharing best practice and further improving the essential service that network operators provide to people throughout the country.”
