04/02/14: Work on £700,000 electricity project starts in south Cumbria

A major engineering project to improve the electricity supply to more than 11,000 homes and businesses in south Cumbria is now under way. Work on £700,000 electricity project starts in Askam and Dalton in Cumbria

The region’s power operator, Electricity North West, is investing £700,000 to reinforce the power supply by installing 5.2km of new improved underground cable between Askam and Dalton.

The project, which is due to be completed by May, will help improve the quality of supply as the new electricity cables are more reliable, require minimal maintenance and are easier to repair in case of a fault, meaning faster reconnections and less disruption for residents and businesses.

Mike Dugdale, programme delivery manager for Electricity North West, said: “This new project, which started this week, highlights our commitment to ensuring our customers receive a reliable and efficient power supply now and for many years to come.

“Unfortunately there is no way to install underground cables without some disruption, but I hope drivers and residents in the area understand the need for this vital project and we promise to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

Broughton Road will be closed from 3rd February for six weeks and Saves Lane will be closed from 14th April for three weeks, diversion routes will be clearly signposted. Temporary traffic lights will also be installed on the following roads while the work is carried out:

• Saves Lane to Ireleth Brow
• Princes Street
• Victoria Terrace
• Victoria Street
• Ulverston Road
