18/12/13: £5m power upgrade gets under way in Lancashire

A multi-million-pound project to upgrade the electricity supply to around 22,000 homes and businesses in Clitheroe and the surrounding areas is now under way. £5m power upgrade gets under way in Lancashire

The region’s power operator, Electricity North West, is investing £5million to reinforce the power supply by installing 9km of improved underground cables and rebuilding 15km of overhead powerlines between Padiham, Clitheroe and Whalley.

The project will help improve the quality of supply as the new electricity cables are more reliable, require minimal maintenance and easier to repair in case of a fault, meaning faster reconnections and less disruption for residents.

Tim Groom, major projects and maintenance for Electricity North West, said: “This is a major project and it shows our dedication to ensuring our customers receive a reliable and efficient power supply now and for many years to come. To do this we must work hard to proactively upgrade the network across the North West.

“Unfortunately there is no way to install underground cables without some disruption, but I hope drivers and residents in the area understand the need for this essential project and we promise to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

The project will be fully completed by October 2014 and residents and businesses will be notified in advance if and when the work is likely to affect them.

The work will be carried out in phases to keep any disruption to a minimum. Currently there are temporary traffic lights on Simonstone Lane heading north from the junction of Burnley Road. Temporary traffic lights will also be installed on 2 January on Blackburn Road at the junction of the A6068 and Burnley Road outside the Bridge Heywood caravan park.
