14/12/11: Engineers restoring power following weather problems in Cumbria

Electricity North West engineers are working to restore power supplies to customers in Alston and other areas of Cumbria following weather-related problems in the area.

Strong winds have brought down power lines, and heavy snow and ice in parts of the county has made it difficult for engineers to get to some areas.

Electricity North West has restored supplies to more than 2,000 customers who were affected by a series of weather-related incidents across the county overnight and this morning, and is currently working to restore power to around 300 remaining customers.

Electricity North West response manager, Jane Fleetwood, said: “We have dozens of engineers on the ground working to restore supplies to customers in Alston, and other areas of Cumbria in very difficult conditions.  Strong winds overnight and this morning have caused some overhead power lines to come down, and ice on lines is also proving difficult to contend with.

“We recently invested in 10 new 4x4s to help our engineers get to remote sites and even with them the conditions are still making it incredibly challenging to reach the most isolated areas to restore supplies.

“We will continue working in the area to get electricity back to customers as quickly and safely as possible.”

Customers who are affected can call Electricity North West’s emergency line on 0800 195 4141.
